Cartonnage mask of Shep en-Mut
8th century BC
Wood, plaster, pigment
Description
The Egyptian Tomb display contains the coffin and mummified body of Shep en-Mut. This area of the museum is treated with special respect. Some of the hieroglyphics on the coffin explain that Shep en-Mut was the daughter of Nesamenopet, carrier of the milk jar of Amun at the Temple of Thebes. She lived over 2,800 years ago.
Visual description: A life-size ancient Egyptian coffin, crafted to mirror the shape of the body. It has a woman’s face, painted with a calm expression and eyes outlined in blue. Her hair is the same blue, topped with a painted headdress designed to resemble layered feathers. The body of the coffin is decorated with intricate designs, hieroglyphs and symbolic imagery. Much of the decoration centres on winged birds or figures.
