Dog collar of Czigane

1910

Leather, copper alloy

Description

Czigane was one of 33 sledge dogs that accompanied Robert Falcon Scott on the 1910 to 1913 British Antarctic Expedition to the South Pole. The dogs were the gift of various British schools, as were the ponies, sledges, tents and sleeping bags used on the expedition. Czigane was sponsored by Radlyn School, Harrogate, who named him Radlyn.

Czigane was brought back to Devon by Harry Pennell, who was commander of the Terra Nova under Scott.

Visual description: A worn brown leather dog collar, decorated with two rows of brass studs, though some are missing. The front of the collar has a brass buckle, loop and name tag. The tag is engraved with ‘Czigane, Terra Nova’.
