A feast for the eyes
April 5, 2025 – March 19, 2026
In this exhibition
Helen Cordelia Angell (1847–84)
1867
Watercolour with gouache on paper
When Angell was practising, gathering this handful of poppies, bindweed and self-heal at the edge of a wheat field would have been easy. Field sizes were smaller, farming less intensive and hedgerows were abundant. Today, farmers who plant wildflowers that support birds and insects are rewarded with government grants.
Angell was an extremely accomplished professional artist, specialising in flowers, fruit and birds.
She became a member of the Royal Academy at a time when few women were permitted. Queen Victoria appointed her Flower Painter in Ordinary, a position she held until her death aged just 37.
