Deller's teapot

Before 1970

Description

This rather bruised teapot came from one of Deller’s popular cafés. There were branches in Exeter, Paignton and Taunton through the 20th century.

Exeter had three. The first opened on 31 October 1906 next door to the Royal Clarence Hotel, on Cathedral Yard. It offered a ballroom and banquets. The second branch opened in December 1916 on Bedford Street and the third in 1923 at 48/49 High Street.

The Deller’s café on Cathedral Yard was destroyed in air raids in 1942 that also badly damaged the Bedford Street branch. Deller’s continued to trade in Exeter from their High Street branch until the 1970s.

Visual description: A slightly dented metal teapot. On one side, it is embossed with the text ‘Deller’s Café, Exeter’ in a small circle.
