Earthenware

Description

This earthenware pot is an example of a North Devon tradition. Pots were dipped in liquid clay (called slip) so that drawings and writing could be scratched through to show the darker clay below. Here you can see a lion, unicorn and the owner's name as well as text reading ‘steal not this pot for fear of shame for hear you see the owner’s name.’

Visual description: A round earthenware pot with a prominent lip. The pot is decorated all the way around in sgraffito style. The decorations are slightly raised and a lighter yellow colour compared to the darker brown that comprises the ‘background’ of the pot. A lion, unicorn, grain and writing feature in the decorations.
