Denim, bark cloth, cotton
Description
Polynesian artist Rosanna Raymond made these barkcloth-decorated jeans in February 2007. Barkcloth represents identity and status and is often used in ceremony. It is culturally significant for Pacific islanders. The manufacture of barkcloth is part of a preserved tradition.
The jeans address questions about cultural identity, continuity and change in the modern Pacific world.
Visual description: A pair of jeans. The original material is no longer visible. The jeans are completely covered with handmade patches of barkcloth. Each patch is stitched with its own distinct pattern.
