Flower Piece
Josina Margareta Weenix (1684-1724)
1713
Oil on canvas
Description
Josina Margareta Weenix was a Dutch artist known for her flower paintings. As the daughter of Jan Weenix and granddaughter of Jan Baptist Weenix, both influential artists themselves, she was from an artistic family spanning three generations. Her work, long misattributed to her younger sister Maria, has only recently been correctly identified in 2020.
Historically, women were excluded from formal training and high-status genres like history painting, often confined to decorative subjects such as flowers. Yet within these constraints, many women developed remarkable skill and achieved commercial success.

Visual description: A still life painting depicting a lush flower arrangement against a dark, earthy background. White, pink, red, orange, and purple flowers of varying sizes and shapes intermingle among green leaves and stalks. There is a white butterfly at the top of the arrangement. At first glance, easily mistaken for another flower. It is resting on a dark stem. Below the flowers, on the right of the painting, a green lizard climbs towards the flowers. Its neck is turned, appearing curious. On the lizard’s left, there is a small snail with a light-brown, spiral shell.
