1998

Enamel on Gold; Hand painted vitreous enamel; 18ct yellow gold; Antique rose gold

Description

Gillie Hoyte Byrom hand-paints portrait miniatures using traditional vitreous enamel techniques. She also experiments with freer methods using sponges, brushes, and pens. Working from her studio in Dartington, Devon, she creates both contemporary portraits and works inspired by historic paintings.

Miniature painting, traditionally practiced by both men and women, replicated large-scale artworks. Byrom continues this tradition with pieces such as her enamel version of Mrs Isaac Oliver, based on a 16th century watercolour by the sitter’s husband. Here, a contemporary artist reimagines a man’s work through a medium that women also used historically. The embroidered floral pattern on the sitter’s shirt reflects fashions of the period.

Her work has received national and international recognition, including the prestigious Jacques Cartier Award.

Visual description: an oval portrait miniature of a woman with a thin, gold frame.  The woman is wearing a white dress with a white lace collar. The dress has a floral design, patterned with green leaves and yellow flowers tinged with purple. Her brown hair is pulled back from her face, hidden by a white lace coif. She is smiling, very softly. The portrait’s black background highlights the paleness of her skin and clothing.
