Description

This longcase or ‘grandfather’ clock has an eight-day movement, so it can run for eight days on a single winding. The clock chimes every hour. It also has a musical mechanism so, at specific three-hour intervals (2, 5, 8 and 11 o’clock), it will play one of six tunes. You can select which tune using the tune selector mechanism on the clock face. There is a chime silencer and a date aperture on the clockface. While in the arch the painted dial shows the phases of the moon.

Visual description: A longcase clock standing over one metre tall. The case is constructed of pine, with veneers of elm and yew. It features carved and inlaid decorations. The top part of the clock, which is square, has a brass overlay and a circular white clock face. There is a brass circle cut out in the middle of the clock face with the hands at the centre. The clock face has Roman numerals around the edge, with Arabic numbers above them. There is a smaller clock face within the main face, showing seconds in Arabic numerals. At the top left and right of the main clock face, there are dials used to silence the chime or select the tune. Above the clock face, in the arch, there is a painted dial depicting the phases of the moon.
