Ammonite
Upper Jurassic Period
Fossil
Description
This giant specimen was collected from Dorset. Perhaps one of the most well-known types of fossils, ammonites were marine animals.
By the Early Jurassic Period, relative sea level had risen. The arid desert plains of Triassic England were gone. There was a permanent shallow shelf-sea between Europe, North America, Africa and the Tethys Ocean. It was the ideal habitat for marine animals like ammonites.
Visual description: A large, complete ammonite fossil. Preserved in chalk, the ribs of the ammonite are visible throughout the spiral.
