Bilas Body Adornments

#1779

설명

Bilas: Island Bling

Adorning the body with bilas is a key focus of creative expression in Solomon Islands. Personal items can enforce the status of the wearer, transform the body for ceremony, and enhance effective communication with ancestors. Bodies and ornaments with a dull or dry appearance are rejected, as they signal neglect and a lack of spiritual nourishment. In contrast, material opulence—as seen in the sheen of polished shell and glossy, oiled skin—is extolled for its splendor. This strong visual aesthetic is interpreted as a sure sign of harmonious relationships with ancestors and auspicious times ahead. Pattern and design are seldom intended as mere surface decoration. Rather, they are important ways to focus spiritual energy and reinforce core cultural values such as balance and symmetry.
