Whakaahuatanga

In 1814, the horn was the first brass instrument successfully fitted with valves. Crooks were retained to select the key in which the instrument is pitched. Valved instruments were built with detachable crooks into the mid-twentieth century. This type of horn, with its distinctive double-plunger valve mechanism, is still preferred by players in Austria.
