Ancient Worlds

ڤنراڠن

The Ancient Worlds gallery focuses on the ancient civilisations of the Mediterranean: Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq), Egypt, Cyprus, Greece and the Roman Empire.

When explorers and treasure hunters first rediscovered ancient sites, they took artefacts home without recording essential information about where and when they were found.

Some 19th-century archaeologists were more careful to document their discoveries. They set the scene for modern archaeology, which gives a more accurate picture of the ancient Mediterranean world and its people. These days, most archaeological finds stay in the country where they were excavated.

Close-up captions: RAMM’s digital close-up captions enable you to use your own mobile device to read the information that is on display beside each object. Follow the link for the close-up captions of Ancient Worlds.
