The Arinjale of Ìsẹ̀ directed the sculptor Ọlọ́wẹ̀ to immortalize the visit of the first British travelling commissioner, Captain W. G. Ambrose, to his court. This panel’s six horizontal bands feature Hausa soldiers, porters, and shackled prisoners carrying boxes of collected taxes on their heads. British officials Major W. R. Reeve-Tucker and Ambrose are depicted, respectively, on horseback in the third row and carried in a litter in the tier above. This delegation faces the enthroned Arinjale, depicted on the portal’s right panel (now in the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art). Ọlọ́wẹ̀ carved three-dimensional figures that project daringly into the viewer’s space, as seen in Ambrose’s twisting posture and outward gaze.

Admiration for the master carver’s innovation and outstanding achievements was such that his patrons came to include Akure, Idanre, Ikẹ́rẹ́, Ilẹ́ṣà, and Ogbogi rulers. Their early twentieth-century commissions followed devastating armed conflicts in which leaders reestablished their authority through ambitious building campaigns. Distinctive features of Yoruba architectural design include imposing portals and verandas that enclose impluvium (rainwater wells). Ọlọ́wẹ̀ produced monumental sculptural programs featuring grand entryways as well as decorative pillars that created sumptuous settings within which his princely patrons conducted state affairs.
