Accessibility

Description

RAMM is committed to providing a welcoming and accessible museum. For a full introduction to the range of accessibility resources on offer, please visit the website.

Getting inside

Wheelchair users and people with mobility scooters, pushchairs and buggies can access the Garden Entrance using the ramp from the blue badge parking area or may use the lift at the Queen Street entrance.

Blue badge parking

RAMM has two parking spaces dedicated to visitors with a blue badge. To reserve a space, please contact reception via email: museum.reception@exeter.gov.uk. Alternatively, call 01392 265960 during opening hours.

Once booked, museum parking permits can be collected from Garden Reception or they can be printed at home upon request.

Accessibility guide

The accessibility guide provides accurate measurements, descriptions and images of RAMM’s accessible features, helping you plan your visit with ease. It is useful for visitors with a variety of access requirements.

Visual stories

The visual stories allow visitors to know what to expect, with pictures and words. This resource has been designed for visitors with autism and their families. However, it might also benefit anyone who feels anxious before visiting. You can borrow a paper version from Garden Reception.

Wheelchair access and hire

There are two lifts in the museum. There is level access on each floor, with ample space to manoeuvre between displays. Some doors open automatically.

RAMM has two wheelchairs that are free to hire during your visit. Please go to reception or ask a member of staff to borrow one.

Accessible toilets

There are accessible toilets on both levels of the museum.

The closest accessible Changing Place toilet is in Princesshay shopping centre. It is on the ground floor of St Stephen’s House at the back of Nationwide in Catherine Square, adjacent to Lloyd’s Lounge. You can find a map on the Princesshay website.

Baby changing and feeding

There are baby change facilities on both levels of the museum. Visitors are welcome to breastfeed and bottle-feed their babies. There are a few areas where you may feel more comfortable feeding your baby, such as the café, the World Cultures book area and the benches around the museum. In some cases, temporary exhibitions prohibit food and drink in the area, so please check with a member of staff if you are unsure.

Working dogs

Trained and liveried assistance dogs are welcome at the museum. RAMM staff will be happy to provide drinking water for your dog.

Quiet times and areas

The museum is often quieter after 3pm during term time. Please note it is best to contact reception to see if there will be any groups in the museum during the time you are hoping to visit.

If you need a quiet space, please let a member of staff know.

The museum regularly runs relaxed sessions for temporary exhibitions. Please see the What’s On page for upcoming events.

Seating

The museum has folding chairs that can be hired from reception, or you can take advantage of the gallery seating. There is also a café where there is plenty of seating.

Marcel (in BSL):

Welcome to RAMM. This video provides an overall introduction to the range of facilities in the museum, which we hope will help you to plan and make the most of your visit.

Admission to RAMM is free. Some of our temporary exhibitions may have a fee and this is stated on our website.

We are open Tuesdays from 10:30am to 5pm, and Wednesdays to Sundays from 10am to 5pm. We are closed Mondays and bank holidays. The museum is usually less busy after 3pm for those interested in a more relaxed environment.

RAMM is Exeter’s world-class museum and is a place of discovery which encourages everyone to be curious. Its fascinating displays reveal Devon and Exeter’s rich history and global connections. Visitors can expect to be delighted by exotic animals, birds and insects, as well as explore natural history, ancient worlds and contemporary art.

RAMM has a changing programme of exhibitions and events inspired by the museum’s collections. Visit our What’s On webpage   for information on upcoming events, including temporary exhibitions, workshops, talks, performances and low-cost or free activities for families.

Children and families will enjoy exploring the interactive activities throughout the museum and can borrow a beastie bag for free from Garden Reception. These bags contain interactive toys, dressing-up clothes and ideas for exploring the museum.

Garden Reception has a ramp access into the museum and our Queen Street entrance has a lift. Maps are available to help you navigate your visit.

RAMM’s shop, located on the ground floor, sells a unique selection of gifts, inspired by the museum’s collections and exhibitions.

You can get here by foot, train, bus or car. Just look out for the large Victorian building on Queen Street. We are well signposted within the city centre.

Exeter Central station is a 2-minute walk away and Exeter St David’s is 15 minutes. There are buses and taxis available from St David’s. Exeter’s bus station is on Bampfylde Street and most buses stop on the main High Street. The nearest coach drop-off point is outside Exeter Central station. Local bus information is found on the Stagecoach website.

Nearby are the Guildhall Shopping Centre car park and Mary Arches car park. We have two parking spaces for blue badge holders at our Garden Entrance. These can be booked by contacting RAMM’s reception.

We also have a range of amenities and accessibility features to make your visit as easy as possible, such as free access to wheelchairs, hearing loops, large print and much more. Visit our Access webpage  for RAMM’s accessibility guide or ask at reception.

We look forward to your visit.
