Honiton lace is the most well-known Devon lace. It was made throughout East Devon and transported to cities including Bath and London.
This sample of lace edging is an early example of a registered design by Charlotte Treadwin. She was one of Devon’s most important lace dealers and manufacturers. Her skill earned her a royal warrant in 1848. The design was advertised as ‘Exeter lace’ and reproduced for a bouquet collar presented to the Duchess of Edinburgh in 1874. You can learn more about the story of Devon lace on RAMM’s collections site.
Visual description: A rectangular sample of lace edging. It has a repeating, symmetrical mesh pattern interspersed with small, evenly spaced floral details. The bottom of the piece is decorated with larger floral details.
